Last week, the US Senate just announced that Scott Gottlieb will be the new commissioner of the US FDA, despite getting a lot of backlash from Democrats. Gottlieb is a doctor and a consultant in the pharma industry, but have faced opposition upon being nominated by President Trump.
If you are wondering who Scott Gottlieb is and why we think that he may be good for the vaping industry, take a look at this article he wrote back in 2013. He is an anti-smoking advocate and is a major critic of the FDA’s decision to treat vaping products as tobacco.
“FDA was to create a path to enable cigarette makers to transition away from smoked tobacco and win government approval of consumable products that used tobacco but presumably harbored less, and perhaps even none of the health risks posed by smoking. When this quid pro quo was pushed through Congress, the industry’s critics and allies each positioned it as a win-win. But it was dependent on FDA being able to establish – and maintain – a regulatory path that let tobacco get approval for new products that posed a ‘reduced harm’ over traditional smoked cigarettes.” ~Scott Gottlieb
He has always been positive about vaping as a better alternative to smoking, and is a major partner in a venture capital firm that invests in vape shops. His vast knowledge about vaping makes him a perfect fit as the guy who will save the industry from black propaganda perpetrated by the media and big tobacco companies.
Conflict of interest? Probably. But we are pretty sure that even if he is a major player in the vaping industry, he would back his decisions with science and evidence.
